Players: whole class or group or group activity 2 or 30+

Pupils can play in pairs, three or larger groups. Each pupil has a card (or they can share a card if the class is over 30), 5 counters per card, a die per group or per pair and a score sheet.

Objective of the game: to cover numbers 1,2,3,4,6 before getting 3×5 or the dreaded l’escargot.

How to play:

Players take turns to throw the die. They must say the number on the die in French, read the question or word in that square and put a counter on the square. If they throw that number again, they can say “je l’ai deja” (I have it already). There is no need to put it on another counter. If a student gets three 5’s (l’escargot) they are out of the game and play continues. The winner is the player left in or the player who covers all their squares first without getting 3x L’escargot.

Pupils may finish games fairly quickly so a score sheet to write the number of wins per pupil is useful. Scores can be read out in French at the end and stickers awarded.

L’escargot covers 20 topics; there are 3 cards per topic, in total you have 60 cards inside the box.
